Proust Writing Photography : Fixing the fugitive in À la recherche du temps perdu
My book is the result of five years of research, and draws extensively on two considerable fields of contemporary literary criticism and thought - Proust studies, and photography theory – in order to ascertain the extent to which photography serves as thematic and stylistic device in Proust’s famously long novel. In order effectively to challenge much received criticism in Proust studies, where the high arts have been privileged as models for artistic creativity for the narrator/protagonist, I have had to undertake extensive archival work to master the previous research in both fields, much of it, in photography, highly technical.
