English abstract

There is a prominent perception in the modern university that religion and theology are remnants of a superstitious age, and that clear thinking will eventually purge academic study of these putatively superstitional elements (e.g., Richard Dawkins’ ‘thinking is anathema to religion’ or Richard Rorty’s contention that theology is destined to follow alchemy and astrology, eventually disappearing entirely as a focus of legitimate intellectual discourse). This essay focuses on the theological term, ‘imago dei’ – first through the post-structuralist thought of Gilles Deleuze, and then through particular aspects of Jewish philosophy – in order to assess the accuracy of such predictions.
