A microfabricated graphitic carbon column for high performance liquid chromatography
This reports the first, fully graphitic-carbon, integrated, microfluidic system. Here, it is uniquely designed and evaluated for a chemical analysis application involving high-pressure, microchip chemicals separations (chromatography). Its lasting influence (reach) is assured in multiple fields, given the particular physiochemical properties of graphite (e.g. temperatures <2500K; electrically conductive), thus enabling new operational paradigms, such as continuous flow electrochemical synthesis. Thermofisher (sponsor supplying £227K HPLC-MS) intends to manufacture a product, like this, when fully developed (Harald.Ritchie@Thermofisher.com). Leading international microchip chromatographer, Jorg Kutter, referenced this work, and employed carbon nanotubes to increase the graphite surface area, as is proposed in this output.
