The monograph is based on four years of fieldwork in Tanzania, with additional research in a few other African countries. The project was informed by cultural and performance studies, but also language studies and research into geopolitical health and development studies. In Tanzania twenty theatre groups in two different regions were investigated by way of participant observation, focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews tohether with six research assistants, primarily from University of Dar es Salaam which acted as my host department. In sum, the research/book project required about six years (2005-2010), including grant applications, research undertakings, teaching-related provisions and publications.
