Antibiotic resistance gene abundances associated with waste discharges to the Almendares River near Havana, Cuba
This research was funded by the EU FP6 funded Marie Curie Excellence Programme (£1.6M, MEXT23469) and was the first comprehensive examination of environmental antibiotic resistance transmission in surface waters in Latin America (contact: Prof Susana Olivares, Cuban Institute of Technology and Applied Science; susana@instec.cu). This work led to EPSRC projects in India and China (£29K and £475K, EP/K004689/1), Canada (£15.4K, EP/K50340X/1), and a leadership role in internationally supported efforts aimed at reducing global antibiotic resistance (Canadian Society for Microbiology and AstraZeneca-UK); contact: Dr Jason Snape, Principle Scientist, AZ-UK; 011803884273.
