Along with Birkinshaw et al. (Hydrol. Process., 2010, 24(26): 3811-3825), this paper summarised the output from the European Space Agency “Rivers and Lakes” ESA/ESRIN research contract 21092/07/I-LG. The ESA study investigated the potential of near real time altimetric heights for river discharge from ESA’s Sentinel3 mission due for launch in 2016. The success of this project has led to further funding from ESA on an award entitled “Cryosat2 Success over Inland Water and Land” (CRUCIAL) ESRIN/Contract No. 4000109110/13/I-NB (€297k).
