Rock and popular music in Ireland: before and after U2
McLaughlin was responsible for Chapters 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11, as well as the section on the Pogues and Corrs in Chapter 3 and the Virgin Prunes section in Chapter 5. The Introduction and Chapters 1, 9 and 12 and the section on Van Morrison in Chapter 4 were jointly authored to the extent that it is difficult to disentangle the contributions made by the respective authors.
This 140000 word monograph involved the collection and analysis of a considerable body of material. This included conducting interviews with a wide range of musicians, promoters, managers, broadcasters and writers. It also involved archival research, especially in relation to the musical press in both Ireland and the United Kingdom. The research additionally entailed detailed analysis of a large number of music ‘texts’, ranging from live performances, to mediated performances on film and video, and musical recordings. Double weighting is requested because of the breadth of sources consulted for the research.
