Children aged 9-14 living in disadvantaged areas in England: Opportunities and barriers for cycling
This is one of the first papers exploring cycling behavior among children of different ethnic backgrounds in the most deprived areas in England using both quantitative and qualitative methods. It shows that cycling varies with ethnicity with around a third of children aged 9-14 from an Asian background having never ridden a bike. It revealed major barriers to cycling are the community’s perceptions that the traffic environment is extremely hazardous and the prevalence of antisocial driving and riding in their neighbourhoods. Importantly, for the active travel agenda, the study showed that most children would like to cycle more.
