Additional information

This well cited paper is the first report of the generation of engineering relevant strength data from micron scale FIB machined cantilevers using nanoindenter based bend tests and crystal plasticity based finite element simulations. The work has led to new projects at Oxford concerning irradiation hardening (Materials for Fusion & Fission Power programme grant EP/H018921/1), grain boundary sliding, and stress corrosion cracking. The methodology also underpins significant parts of the new HexMetal programme grant (EPSRC EP/K034332/1) and is being transferred to zirconium alloys through a UK-India collaboration (EPSRC EP/I012346/1) and a UK-USA collaboration (EPSRC EP/K039237/1).
