The extensive research underpinning this 2012 book (284 pp) builds on several interlocking ethnographic case-studies (covering 5 years) obtained over 16 months of independent anthropological fieldwork in rural villages of Mongolia and China. The research produced a unique body of new primary source materials, gathered using rare local dialects of Mongolian and Chinese. Throughout the book, the author presents new and complex theory – recognised by peers as ‘invaluable’ – which shows step-by-step how ‘animistic’ religions resolve long-term problems with innovative remedies.
