Additional information

<20>This paper identifies perceptual mechanisms underlying people's inability to comprehend data from factorial experiment designs presented in line graph form compared to equivalent bar graphs. The factors identified are used to design a novel graph that facilitates correct interpretation. Tests show significant improvements in comprehension using the new design. The value of the research lies in its demonstration of critical limitations in a common graph format and the use of empirical evidence to inform and improve its design. Human Factors has an acceptance rate of 20% and an impact factor of 1.182, according to http://www.hfes.org/publications/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=1.
