<22> We present a real-world application, drawn from precision engineering, as a new benchmark automated planning application, related to the automated production of calibration plans for machine tool accuracy. We show how a complex measurement process can be modelled using domain independent planning technology and used to produce optimal action sequences (measurements) which are shown to rival those produced by industry experts. The technique has already been used successfully by a company, Machine Tool Technologies Ltd, of Nelson, Lancashire, sustaining our expectation that the approach will fully replace manual calibration-plan construction.
