Comparison of nano-f`retting and nano-scratch tests on biomedical materials
The first paper to report use of novel accelerated nanomechanical testing methods for tribological characterisation of biomaterials. The approach used simulates the repetitive and complex contact occurring in the body during abrasion by third-body wear. It addresses a key mechanism that governs roughening of metallic surface and damage nucleation at the bearing surface of artificial joints. It proved that nano-fretting method extends significantly the capability of nanomechanical testing in the optimisation of biomaterials. It has led to follow on research and ongoing collaboration with MicroMaterials – leading international manufacturer of innovative nanomechanical measurement equipment.
