Additional information

Supported by Chinese Nature Science Foundation (grant 60535010), this article reports results from collaboration with the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Harbin Institute of Technology, China, to inform the on-going development work of the future Chinese Lunar lander mission. Article presents new and novel techniques, introducing the concept of embedded autonomy to the guidance and control of future lunar landers through the use of Direct Adaptive Control. It is shown that the use the use of embedded autonomy in the control loop increase the robustness of the control system to multiple failures when compared with a ‘traditional’ control system
