A Syntax for Defining, Communicating, and Implementing Video Decoder Function and Structure
Published in a leading, international journal, this research presents a novel approach to video coding where the video decoder functionality and structure is coded as header information in a video stream using Decoder Description Syntax (DDS). With this fully-configurable video coding approach, any video decoder can be dynamically instantiated at the receiver as defined by DDS. This eliminates the need for multiple decoder implementations at receivers, reducing costs and improving interoperability. This pioneering work has significantly influenced the work of ISO/IEC MPEG Reconfigurable Coding initiative in developing and optimising reconfigurable hardware and software video decoders (DOI 10.1007/s12243-012-0342-7)
