Additional information

This paper showed for the very first time how it is possible to incorporate very small block co-polymer structures (on the same scale as proteins) into calcium carbonate single crystals, mimicking shell structures seen in nature. Hardness of the crystals was observed to increase by 16%. Such increases are very unusual and only previously seen in natural systems. This opens up the potential for hard coatings and novel ceramic based composites. The work has led to further funding and has been influential to a number of other groups (Contact: Lara Estroff, Cornell University; lae37@cornell.edu)
