Gone with the Wind
Gone with the wind curated by Ed Baxter took place at Raven Row Gallery in 2011 (9th June – 17th July). The show featured work by Max Eastley alongside two further pioneers of Sound Art Takehisa Kosugi and Walter Marchetti and was supported by Resonance104.4fm.
In particular Eastley’s work in the exhibition developed a distinct approach to the problem of representing immateriality, while sharing a lightness of touch, approaching sound with patience, restraint and fidelity. Eastley’s contributions to the exhibition included:
• An aeolian installation mounted on the roof of the gallery.
• Live improvised performances with Steve Beresford and David Toop.
• A kinetic sound-making device in the gallery – Landscape.
• Solo performance with an electro-acoustic monochord responding to the Aeolian sound.
Sound from the roof-top aeolian installation was routed into the gallery space and amplified through transducers fixed behind the doors of the rooms effectively turning them into concealed loudspeakers. The aeolian sound mingled with the sound of the kinetic sculptural instrumentation in the gallery including Eastley’s installed work Landscape. Landscape consists of steel shot fragments activated by a concealed rotating magnet and for the purposes of Gone with the wind it was mounted above a fireplace in place of a picture crating a series of grating sounds in contrast to the subtle ebb and flow of the aeolian materials. A new version of the work developed for the Craft Council’s Sound Matters tour is fitted with a contact microphone and amplified through speakers fitted in the plinth that supports it.
In addition to exploring the relationship between wind generated and kinetic installation sound Eastley also gave a solo performance consisting of an electro acoustic monochord accompanied by a live feed from the roof installation.
There is documentation of all of these activities included in the accompanying portfolio.
