Dr Grant McIntyre is a Consultant Orthodontist employed by NHS Tayside and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Dundee having been awarded his PhD from the University in 2002. His research responsibilities include authoring and co-authoring of publications (29 during the REF period), co-supervision for 8 research degrees students (2 PhDs, 5 MDScs and 1 BMSc) and Principal Investigator for 5 research projects based at the University of Dundee. He has collaborative research contacts in Cardiff (UK), Cork (Ireland) and China.

Dr McIntyre’s research interests and expertise span both the orthodontic and orofacial clefts fields, as follows:

In Orthodontics, works with Bearn and others in (a) effectiveness of orthodontic care (involved in 1 RCT and 3 Cochrane Reviews since 2008) and (b) stereophotogrammetry for evaluation of the effect of orthodontic appliances on facial expression.

In orofacial clefts, works with Mossey and others in (a) role of heredity and parental craniofacial morphology in the transmission of clefts, (b) 3D volumetric assessment of alveolar bone grafting, (c) 3D imaging using intra-oral optical scanning as an alternative to dental impressions, and (d) the scanning and assessment of dental models in the analysis of outcomes of cleft care.
