Novel acylated steroidal glycosides from Caralluma tuberculata induce caspase-dependent apoptosis in cancer cells
This paper describes the extraction, purification and spectroscopic analysis of naturally occurring compounds shown to be potent cytotoxic agents and may represent new leads in the development of anti-tumour drugs, particularly in the treatment of breast cancer. Barton’s contribution to this research was through his knowledge of the separation science required for the successful isolation of the active compounds along with his expertise in the spectroscopic techniques such as mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy required for structural elucidation of the compounds.
