Additional information

While researching the place-name evidence concerning the location of Brunanburh it became apparent to Cavill that some interpretations of the evidence were flawed because the writers used antiquated and inaccurate editions of the Latin texts. A major contribution to the book as a whole and to the rigour of his essay was the editing of the early Latin texts from manuscript where possible. The notes on the manuscripts and texts were written in collaboration with Scott Thompson Smith. The cumulative extent of the texts edited is about 60 pages.
