Additional information
This is the first study of the fragmentation of biomolecules induced by electron transfer in collisions with electronegative atoms. The experiments provide an analogy for electron transfer processes from electronically excited neutrals to DNA in irradiated material. Metastable molecular anions are recognised to play a key role in radiation damage to DNA, hence this work contributes to its understanding on the nanoscale. This is important both from a biomedical standpoint and for the development of biomolecular applications in novel materials.
